The Pillar of Almenara
Near Agramunt, four kilometres away from its historical centre, the
Pillar of Almenara rises up. It is a round tower of Muslim origin, with a height of 15 metres, from where one has an impeccable panoramic view of the Pla d'Urgell. It is a watchtower that was built in the XI century, on the highest part of the mountain range with the same name that separates the basins of the Sió and of the Ondarra, and where the municipalities of Agramunt and Tárrega were established.
This perfectly restored round tower allows the access to its highest part, where one can contemplate impressive views over the valley of Urgell on one side, and the pre-Pyrenean mountain range on the other. One can also find, a few metres away from the tower, the remainders of the church and a part of the defensive wall that confined the castle of Almenara. This castle was constituted by the tower itself, some houses, the church and these defensive walls.
